Armory Show
Darby Milbrath
September 9 – 12, 2021
Booth P18
Projet Pangée is pleased to unveil a solo presentation by Darby Milbrath for The Armory Show. With this new series of paintings, canvases become the sites of evocation for the mystical and emotional natural realm. In doing so, symbols and figures mingle and intertwine with rich foliage in pictural compositions that allude to the self-taught painter’s memories and personal dreamscapes as well as her background in dance and herbalism.
Drawing inspiration from the Romanticism of the 18th century, this new body of work emphasizes on emotion, mysticism, and the sublimity of nature. These paintings depict solitaire and contemplative figures who are lost or hiding, whether literally–within a wild landscape that overpowers them– or figuratively–in a state of dreams or hallucinations. Milbrath explores painting as a form of escapism and respite; a place of hope and healing.
_______________
Darby Milbrath (b.1985, Vancouver Island, Canada) is a Toronto-based, self-taught painter whose figurative paintings are imbued by her past as a contemporary dancer and herbalist. The ritualistic and intuitive nature of her work reflects spiritual interests. Milbrath’s paintings come from a place of memory and imagination. The sublimity of nature on the coastal gulf islands whereon she was raised, and her mysticism that began as a young girl there, are recurring motifs in her paintings.
Milbrath has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally. Recent solo exhibitions include Night Gallery, LA, 2021; PM/AM London UK, 2021; and Projet Pangée, Montreal, 2020. Her work was presented by Projet Pangée at Material Art Fair (Mexico) in 2017 and 2020. Milbrath’s work can be found in the RBC Collection.
