For its participation in the upcoming edition of Art Toronto (October 27–30, 2022), Pangée is delighted to bring together works by Nicholas Bierk (Toronto), Ayla Dmyterko (Glasgow), Ben Gould (Brooklyn), Élise Lafontaine (Montreal), and Darby Milbrath (Toronto).
This curation gathers artists who fully invest their bodies in the creation of their works. For Darby Milbrath, who was trained as a contemporary dancer, her expressionist paintings come from memory and imagination and are informed by nostalgia, visions, and mysticism. Through non-verbal approaches, both contemporary dance and painting require the implication of the body, intensity in presence, and an authentic expression of the self to truly transcend the complexities of human life and emotions as experienced. Élise Lafontaine’s paintings are rooted in extensive immersive research where she stays in isolated communities such as monasteries, prisons for women and psychiatric environments. Ayla Dmyterko’s multidisciplinary practice brings to life memories from her childhood, Ukrainian folklore and traditions. With the desire to capture what is evanescent and fleeting, Nicholas Bierk’s paintings offer an open-ended narrative. His small but no less potent paintings are recollections of what he encounters in his daily life–while taking some walks, or meditating. After the sudden and late development of Tourette Syndrome, Ben Gould’s studio practice shifted into an ongoing exploration on limits, resistance, and the loss of control. His sculptures are informed by his performances and vice versa.
Exploring from within, the selected artists are in the search of something greater and intangible. With a strong connection to mysticism, each work presents itself as a portal leading beyond the physical realm.
