Élise Lafontaine

Élise Lafontaine (b. 1984) lives and works in Montreal (Tiohtià:ke). Her hybrid practice, situated at the intersection of abstraction, sculpture, and the shaped canvas, explores the body as an architecture shaped by sensory experience. Working primarily in oil on linen mounted on sculpted structures, she approaches painting as a spatial and phenomenological experience guided by rhythm, resonance, and threshold. Seeking to inscribe in matter a secular equivalent of prior experiences of transcendence, her works do not depict the sacred, but rather convey its affective and spatial power. Represented by Pangée, she has shown her work in Canada and internationally (Centre CLARK, Jack Barrett, Daniel Faria) and has participated in various residencies, notably at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York.
