Pangée is thrilled to participate in the 20th edition of NADA Miami (Booth 6.06), which will be held at Ice Palace Studios from November 30 to December 3, 2022. For the occasion, Pangée is delighted to present Darby Milbrath (she/her, b.1985, lives and works in Toronto, Canada) and Vanessa Brown (she/her, b.1981, lives and works in Vancouver, Canada). Milbrath and Brown grew up in the West Coast Gulf of British Columbia, a fertile and sublime landscape that shaped their relationship to the land and that manifests in their art as recurring motifs.
Darby Milbrath is a self-taught painter whose practice is imbued by her past as a contemporary dancer and herbalist. Her expressionist paintings stem from memory and imagination, while the cyclical nature of ebb and flow, death, and rebirth are ongoing themes explored in her paintings. Vanessa Brown's art practice encompasses sculpture and installation. Brown's primary medium is steel, as the artist is interested in challenging its historical associations with industry, war, and monuments. Brown explores how iconography has been translated and altered over time. By raising these questions, Vanessa Brown's work explores how time, image, and place can hold simultaneous, and sometimes conflicting, worldmaking meanings. Echoing Milbrath's symbols and themes, the imagery in Brown's work draws from various sources, including landscapes, historical crafts, dream interpretation, feminized labour, gestures of comfort, and ideas of escape.
