Solo presentation Claire Milbrath (Victoria, BC).
Milbrath’s new body of work blends alpine peaks, tulip-lined fields, historic gardens, and serene sailboats into a study of landscape that is charged with wonder, intensity, and renewal. The repetition of her brushstrokes captures moments of frenetic beauty, distilling awe in turn.
Milbrath recently moved to a house on Victoria’s Salish Sea, where the horizon line is the towering Olympic Mountains and white sails speckle across the blue water. She began reading wind charts and attending sailing races, seeing harmony, drama, and humility in the boats moving with or against nature’s uncontrollable winds.
She was constantly seeing a form that she could paint on repeat, similar to her recent dedication to tulips, following the tailwinds of playing with shape, colour, washes, and speed that unlocked a sense of reckless freedom in her medium. Milbrath applied these lessons to her paintings of tulips and gardens, harnessing energy and experimentation in their renderings, setting sail on her brushstrokes.
