Screams of A Thousand Suns
Artists: Oreka James (Toronto)
Exhibition: April 29, 2021 – June 5, 2021
A glimmer, a stillness left behind curiously retaining shape, transmuting in omnicolor, beaming in all its glory, in all its wondrous record. The raconteur who recalls the pungent smell of rain after a nightmare, telling stories of sweet, sweet destruction and aching revival. What is present is constant transformation, an unending journey to arrive in secrecy then revealing upon surfacing and continuing a cycle of transitioning. Fluttering in and out, crossing planes of great wonder left behind by those who may return in the form of light.
Screams of A Thousand Suns is a conduit of hope and possibility, examining the enormities and fluctuations between loss and love, life and death while making multiple cross-references to oral traditions, African-Caribbean folklore, ancient cultures, animism all within attempts to provide sight into the future. James reimagines the excavation of histories of land and peoples, understanding this process as a means of wayfinding and to determine where they might intersect. They look to consider the fantastical, revisiting dreams and memories, creating narratives of beings who transpose dimensions and objects that function as placeholders.
